2004  June 20 Sunday               map reference   3 .

From Rouen by coach and a lunch break en route, we come to:
Oradour-sur-Glane.
We stay at this "where time stood still" museum for 3 hours.
This town is still in the state it was left in by the Nazi German forces on June the 10th 1944.

Photo of before war

and today:

In the museum you learn to know the villige and its inhabitants.
Walking around in the village, after the museum which gives entrance by stairs, is overwhelming because here one may see and feel the devastation. It will grab you !

This haunting place makes one understand the reality of what has happened.

ORADOUR-SUR-GLANE

Before war and
today:

Oradour-sur-Glane was not designed as a death camp but turned out to be the place of such horrific death,

The Nazi's killed all 646 residents of this village in France. Even today it's still unknown why this peaceful place was chosen as revenge for French underground action against the Nazi's.

What happened here can be witnesed too in Terezin, in the eastern part of Europe where the Nazi's wiped out the heart of a village.

When at the cemetry notice all the dates of death on the gravestones. They're all the same date!

On our links page you may find a link to purchase a book about the history of this village at Amazon.

The entrance of the new museum and when coming out, the stairs down to Martyrer village Oradour-sur-glane.

Le Chambon-sur-Lignon although difficult to reach by bus, will be visited after all. Annik Flaud, local scholar and one of the founders of the "Le Chambon Museum", guides us around.

Facing the temple (above), a commemorative plate gives back homage discretely to inhabitants of the Tray for their hospitality between1939/1944.

The Temple was built between 1810 and 1850, many years but the result was beautiful. This was the place of worship for the Le Chambon Protestants, Christians.

At Israels Yad Vashem, Le Chambon is collectively honored for their righteous deeds. Normally that honor goes to individuals. There are trees planted along the Avenue of the Righteous.

LE CHAMBON-SUR-LIGNON.

During World War II, people of Le Chambon, a small village in the mountains sheltered an estimated 5000 Jews. Although Le Chambon numbered only 5000 inhabitants, they helped them with food, hiding places and escort to safer places too.

Birds eye view of Le Chambon.

They wrote an unique history of goodness. We will learn from Annik Flaud how it was possible and how the Christians of Le Chambon managed to hide families for sometimes as long as 4 years.

Le Chambon more than 60 years ago.

In total there are 5 group dinners and three group lunches.

The videos shown on the bus partly pertain to the Holocaust sites shortly before we visit them. For the other part, they contain information regarding the cities we are approaching. One video concerns the life of Miep Gies, Anne Frank's helper.

Please take note that the background of the Hotel information differs slightly in color.

Pictures are merely way to give an impression; they may not represent the exact view we will meet. Hotels in particular always show pictures of their most beautiful rooms.
